ABC Rescues Rock Agility Trials

"Lucas' Living on the Edge" - Hobbes
The Lucas and Gordon's ABC rescue bassets have been tearing it up at AKC agility trials.  ABC Rescue is so proud of their superstar alumni!  You are all shining examples of what rescued dogs can do.

Yesterday (6/24/12), despite the heat, Hobbes earned his 7th MXP legs (Master Agility Preferred title), and 12 points towards his PACH (Preferred Agility Champion title.)  Those require 10 qualifying scores in AKC's Excellent B classes.  Hobbes has only been participating in Agility since January.  Since then, he's earned his NAP, NJP, OJP, OAP, AXP and AJP titles.  He has 4 QQ's and over 100 points towards his PACH title, needs 3 legs for his MXP (Master Agility Preferred title) and 2 for his MJP (Masters Jumper Preferred) title. Even more exciting, he's cemented his standing as the #2 basset in AKC Agility in the country, and is qualified for the 2012 AKC Agility Invitational in FL in December.  Only the top five of each breed are invited!

Hobbes has achieved all of this before his fourth Birthday!  He is the Lucas' agility superstar - affectionately known as the "Girasset" - basset/giraffe since, as Lisa says, "he's a wee bit on the leggy side."  At only seven weeks old, Hobbes (originally named Oliver) was part of a cruelty case, and was rescued with 4 females and 14 puppies.  He was adopted out, but just one month later, his adoptive family tried to sell him on Craigslist.  Lisa convinced them to return him to Lollypop Farms to evaluate him for ABC rescue.  The Lucas' had just lost their 1.5 year old 'Z', suddenly and unexpectedly, and were still grieving.  Although Lisa had no intention of adding another dog to the Lucas clan, Hobbes wound up going home with her the day he was returned.  Oliver was renamed 'Hobbes' after the tiger in 'Calvin and Hobbes'.  His official name for AKC agility is Lucas's Living on the Edge AXP, AJP, CTL1, CTL2, CTL3-H, CTL3-R, CTL3-F, L1T-PLT (all agility titles.)  Thanks so much to Lisa and her family for rescuing the wonderful Hobbes.
Hobbes, what a handsome guy
The Lucas' also have another superstar in their family - Princess is the #1 Basset Hound in AKC Agility trials in the country (see blog post dated 1/31/2012)!  Princess is also an ABC rescue dog and is officially known as CT-ATCH Lucas's Definitely a Diva PAX MXP3 MJP4 NFP NA NAJ NF NAC TG-N NJC TExST - HIT Hound 2009 CPE Nationals, 2011 AKC Agility Invitational Qualifier.

In addition, the Lucas' family is rounded out with C-ATCH3 CT-ATCH Buford (Basset) CGC RE BN NAJ AXP AJP OFP NJC S-TN-N O-NAC O-TG-N ChWC ChCL ChST ChFH ChSN ChJP ChJU TChWC TChFH TChCL TChJU and Alkemi Austin Healey ST (Austin-Swedish Vallhund) CL1-R CL1-F CL1-H.  Recently Lisa adopted Bosley, an ABC rescue who she has also started training for Agility - Lucas's Back from the Brink (Bosley-Basset).  What an amazing and talented family!  Lisa should write a book about the lives of her 'superstars' although I'm not sure how she'd find the time.

Congratulations to Lisa, Hobbes, Princess, Buford and Austin!  And good luck to Bosley who has some big shoes to fill.  We will be rooting for you at the AKC Agility trials in FL.  Let us know when and where so we can keep in touch!

Rags to Ribbons Diesel and all around beautiful hound!
ABC has another rising star in the AKC Agility trials - Diesel Gustav Gordon, Shelly and Don's superstar agility rescue.  (See blog post from 1/31/2012 to read about Shelly and Diesel's Agility career.)  Diesel has achieved his first AKC Agility Title (NJP) in a perfect novice standard run in 14 seconds under time.  Link to video of Diesel's perfect run.

Diesel practicing his agility in his own backyard!
Happy Diesel with a wonderful family!
Spanky got a chance to meet Diesel at the Basset Blast and was very inspired to walk a little bit faster.  He was happy to note that Diesel hasn't let stardom go to his head - he is still a really great, down-to-earth, all around guy.

Congratulations to Don and Shelly and Diesel!  We look forward to many more successful runs and giving Hobbes a run for his money.

Many thanks to Lisa Lucas and Shelly Gordon for all of the information, pictures and video!

Oliver!
Congratulations to Oliver and his new forever family.  Thank you Amanda and Andrew for making this little boy's dreams come true!

Sweet little Oliver has been in foster care since January 11th.  He is two years old and was thankfully rescued from a kill shelter in Virginia on his very last day.  Thank you ABC for saving this sweet boy's life and to his foster family for giving Oliver the temporary home he so desperately needed!

Handsome Oliver finds home and family!
Oliver is described as a real character with a beautiful bay voice and his intake writeup describes him as a real 'thinker'.   Amanda, Oliver's new Mom, said he is very well behaved and the very BEST DOG EVER!   Upon arriving at his new home, his new family introduced him to the ferrets and bunnies in the household and Oliver was afraid of the baby bunny!  I'm sure Oliver would say that's not 'fear' just absolute respect for his new brothers and sisters.  He was not too afraid though, he was wagging his tail the whole time.  Although his new Mom and Dad bought him a brand new doggie bed Oliver has already taken to sleeping in their bed, a true Basset Hound personality.  Another match made in heaven by ABC Adoption Coordinator, Laura Johnson.

We know you will take really good care of your new family Oliver and congratulations on finding that very special forever home.  Don't forget to post pictures of the handsome Oliver and his new home life - we will add them to the blog post.  We pray you have many happy years with Oliver!

Update from Annie and Dexter's Family

Annie and Dexter Riding in Style
Newlywed couple, Anne and Jimmy Himes sent us a wonderful update and pictures of Annie and Dexter in their new home.  What a great way to start a life together - giving a bonded pair of Basset Hounds a forever home and family!  Many thanks especially for allowing these two to remain together - they are so devoted to one another.  It is so good to hear they are doing great in their new home and filling your lives with love and laughter!

Following is Anne and Jimmy's letter to Adoption Coordinator, Laura Johnson:

"We wanted to get in touch to let you both know that Annie and Dexter are doing really well here. They fit so well in our family, I don't know what we did without them.

We recently signed them up for the off leash dog parks in Monroe County, and they have really been loving the new park at Ellison. Dexter loves to meet other dogs, and although sometimes Annie gets a little scared of the other dogs, and of new people, she is learning to socialize there. She isn't velcro'd to our side the whole time there, and has actually gone up to people on her own. Everyone tells her how beautiful she is and how handsome her brother is. :) After several days of going to the park in a row, we didn't go to the dog park today, and Annie sat right by my car this evening, refusing to go for a walk--I think she was hoping to go meet some more friends.
Looks like Annie plans to drive herself to the dog park!
Although we can't wait to have a fenced in yard at home, we are waiting until we can purchase the empty lot next to our house (city lots are so small). In the meantime, one of the great things about having these two, is going for walks all the time, and getting to meet the neighbors. We didn't know how many other dog owners (and dog lovers) we lived near, but it's great! The hounds recently got to meet two beagles who live nearby. They seemed especially excited to meet other hounds. As Kevin had mentioned, Annie and Dex weren't used to walking on leashes, but they're doing well with them. We have a harness for Dexter, and that certainly makes it easier to walk with him.

And at home, they are just awesome. We have two constant snugglers, who even love us after we give them a bath (oh the indignity of being plopped in the tub). They were waking us up very early in the morning (3:30 was too early), until we moved their dog bed into our room. Now they sleep in, and sometimes have to be lured out of bed in the morning for breakfast. Dexter gives Annie so many sweet kisses, and we are lucky enough to get some to. He seems to think it's his job to take care of us now.
Annie and Dex at play in their new home.
They're very good at the house during the day, but it's quite hard to leave them to go to work in the morning. We tell them that we have to so we can afford the 'biscuit budget.'  One day, Jimmy took them to visit me at work. In one of the attached pictures, you can see that Annie was ready to get to work herself!
Annie hard at work
They are just so fantastic! We can't believe anyone would give them up, but are soooo grateful that ABC rescued them, that Kevin fostered them, that Laura coordinated the adoption, and that they came to us. We hope to see you at some ABC events in the future."By Anne and Jimmy HimesThanks so much to Anne and Jimmy for sharing this story and pictures with us.  Take good care of your new humans Annie and Dex - you've found a pair of really wonderful humans!  This proves the point that two Bassets are double the joy!  ABC still has two pairs of bonded Basset Hounds looking for their forever home.  Check out their descriptions and pictures on the ABC website.  If you are considering adopting Scarlett and Snickers or Wynne and Cherry fill out an ABC Adoption Application here.
Cherry and Wynne
Laura and Scott Johnson were originally fostering Cherry and Wynne and they now have moved on to Chris Brothers' home for further socialization.  Laura said they were getting "too
comfortable" ...hmm, sounds like foster Mom and Pop were getting too comfortable too.  About Cherry and Wynne Laura says, "Contrary to popular belief, a bonded pair is not more work or too much to handle. Especially not these guys! They keep each other company, and entertained. And since they are smaller than the average basset hound, it really is like having only one, with double the personality!"
Scarlett and Snickers still searching for that perfect forever home.

ABC will be holding an Adoption Event on Sunday, August 12 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Camp Bow Wow, Henrietta, NY.  Camp Bow Wow is located at 85 Mushroom Blvd., Rochester, NY.  Find the loves of your life and adopt one (or two) of ABC's wonderful Basset Hounds.  There is no home too small for a Basset, the only place they take up a lot of room is in your heart.  Wynne and Cherry will be there - a wonderful bonded pair of sisters who will bring love and joy to any home.  View the list of available Bassets at ABC's web page NY Basset.org.

Camp Bow Wow's newsletter has an excellent write-up on the coming event at Camp Bow Wow to Foster Basset Hounds.  Kudos to Camp Bow Wow's staff for volunteering their time to introduce these hounds to their new forever families!

In addition to the Bassets listed on the available section of the website, ABC has teamed up with some of our Southern rescue friends to transport homeless Bassets North to find forever homes.  Right now volunteers are needed to help transport several dogs from Raleigh, NC to Maryville, TN this weekend. Carolina Basset Rescue is trying to move some of the dogs coming up for the event to temporary kenneling in TN until the ABC transport arrives to drive them to the August 12th event.  A volunteer has stepped up to kennel them for free so they will be ready for their travel North to new lives.  If you can help transport these wonderful guys to TN please contact Carolina Basset Rescue ava.whalen@hotmail.com or contact ABC's intake coordinator Sommer Slavin at SommerSlavin@hotmail.com.

If you think you see the next love of your life here or on our website please be sure to fill out an adoption application prior to the event at www.nybasset.org!

ABC Alumni Beaux at the Rainbow Bridge

To contact us Click HERE
Beaux, what a handsome guy!
By Laura Johnson

Meet Beaux.

Beaux left his Human and basset sister to go to the rainbow bridge yesterday.

Beaux, who was formerly Bo-Bo, was an ABC Alumni, from 2001.  He was 15.
Phil Dutcher is his human, and will always be his human. His sister, Jasmine is also left behind.
Beaux and Jasmine
I did not write this story to be morbid nor to be sad. I didn't do it to make you feel bad, or to get you to open your wallets. I did this, to show what love can do.

The average life expectancy for a basset hound is 10-12 years.  The life expectancy of a rescue dog can be considerably less, when you factor their pasts.  Beaux lived and loved his human for the majority of his years...his 15 long years.

This is a shining example of what love can do. When Phil would come home after being gone all day, there would be Beaux, with his deep bay and soulful eyes.  He used those eyes to his own full advantage to get Phil to open the cookie jar.  He would greet everyone that came to the house with the same bay and with his sister Jasmine.   Both were shameless in their quest for the belly rub.  I remember being on the floor of his office while we were working on my taxes one year, completely in heaven with Jazzy and Beaux as they competed with each other for my lap space.  I left with a completed tax return, covered in fur and slobber....and with a ridiculous smile on my face.  This experience was right after I had gotten Molly, so it was only a reaffirmation of a blooming basset obsession.
Beaux was a deep soul, and yet a simple one. His love was there for the taking, you only had to be smart enough to accept it.

The love of our rescue hounds is, what I consider, the pinnacle of pure devotion. They give themselves so completely to you...and yet maintain their sense of self.  They are unapologetic in their quest for attention and cookies.  They trot along as if there is nothing to be worried about, as long as they are with you.  When Phil was hard at work in his office, you would find Beaux under his chair.  Making like an area rug, but ready at any moment to get up and "WWWOOOOOOOO" if someone came to the door, or if Phil headed to the kitchen. (Again...cookie jar)

Then you look closer into those eyes and you see that there is a history of pain, like any other living thing on our planet.  They see and suffer like the rest of us, and when you are sad, or in need of love, they dip into that never ending well of love and give it to you until you have enough to carry on. All they ask for in return is a belly rub...and maybe a cookie.

You will be missed Sir Beaux.  Phil posted this on his Facebook page yesterday, and I think it says it all.
With sympathy and prayers to Phil, his family and Jazzy.
" Rough day today; had to say good-bye to my 15 year old Basset - Beaux. He's in doggie heaven now where there are no fences and the cookie jar is bottomless. Love ya Bubb's."

Drool Fest was a wonderful success in spite of the somewhat cool and soggy weather.  There was a ball with musical hoops, costume contest, our own DJ John, and a whole lot of bassets.  Five bassets found their new homes and two more found their way into rescue looking for their forever home.  This is why we do what we do.  Thanks to everyone who came to support the rescue as well as the Drool Fest committee and volunteers that worked hard since August planning this great event!  Here is a link to Drool Fest's fabulous photos taken by ABC's outstanding photographer John Elliot who does such a wonderful job capturing ABC's events NY 2012 Droolfest, DF Fun and Games, Droolfest Memories.
